The remaining budget: the starting point

The problem with a budget isn't just knowing how much you have in your account.

Part of your money is already earmarked for rent, subscriptions, bills, and other upcoming deductions.

Money Loom therefore starts with what really matters for your spending: what you have left once these amounts are taken into account.

💡 Simple example

Income $2,000
Bills and expenses − $1,200
Remaining budget $800

The $800 is your available budget for the expenses you will actually make during the period.

You can then decide how to allocate it across your different envelopes.

And your daily budget?

Money Loom also uses your budget situation to give you a simple benchmark: how much can you spend today?

This amount changes based on your spending and the time left. The goal isn't to impose an extra rule, but to give you a concrete number to make your daily decisions.

The envelope method applied to your remaining budget

The envelope method consists of allocating your budget across different spending categories.

Groceries, gas, entertainment, clothing, unexpected expenses… everyone can create the categories that match their own way of managing money.

With Money Loom, these envelopes are not independent of the rest of your budget: they are linked to your remaining budget.

1

📥 Allocate

Define the amount you want to assign to each envelope from your remaining budget.

For example: $350 for groceries, $150 for transportation, and $100 for entertainment.

2

💸 Spend

Enter your expenses throughout the month and Money Loom updates your envelopes.

This way, you see what's left in each category.

3

🔄 Adjust

Did a category end up costing more than expected? You can reorganize your budget between your envelopes instead of starting from scratch.

Envelopes that communicate with each other

This is one of the limits of a traditional envelope: if you budgeted $100 for clothing but ultimately need $130, you have to find where to get the extra $30.

Money Loom allows you to handle this situation directly.

🔄 Example: adding $30 to an envelope

Your Groceries envelope needs an extra $30.

🛒
Groceries Need +$30
+$30
🎬
Entertainment You authorize the transfer
−$20
👕
Clothing You authorize the transfer
−$10

You therefore choose the envelopes to take the necessary $30 from.

The envelopes thus act as an interconnected system: you can move your budget to where you actually need it.

🛡️ And if the other envelopes aren't enough?

This is where the link to the remaining budget becomes important.

If the envelopes you chose cannot cover the necessary amount, Money Loom warns you that the shortfall will be taken from your remaining budget.

You therefore know immediately that you are reducing your overall margin, rather than just moving money between two categories.

A reminder before you exceed your envelope

An envelope doesn't need to wait until it's empty to warn you.

You can set a reminder amount for each envelope.

🔔 Example: $100 envelope

You create a $100 Clothing envelope.

You choose a reminder at $20 remaining.

🔔 Clothing: you have $20 left in this envelope.

When your spending reaches $80, Money Loom warns you.

You then know that your envelope is approaching its limit and can decide to slow down your spending or, if necessary, reorganize your budget.

The reminder therefore occurs before the limit is exceeded, and not after.

Why switch from paper envelopes to your phone?

The envelope method is simple and can be very effective. But paper becomes less practical when expenses are mainly made by card or online.

Money Loom therefore keeps the principle of the envelope method, but integrates it into a broader system based on your remaining budget and daily budget.

Envelopes are just one part of Money Loom

Money Loom is above all a tool to help you understand your available budget and know what you can spend. Envelopes then come in to organize this budget.
